2009 Annual Report

Tomorrow is Here Today

Your generous gifts contributed to the Foundation raising $4.1 million to help the Hospital provide state-of-the-art healthcare to thousands of individuals. For more information of how the Northridge Hospital Foundation support providing state-of-the-art healthcare to our community read the 2009 Annual Report.

In 2009 the Hospital embarked on a $7.8 million expansion project of the Thomas and Dorothy Leavey Cancer Center. The Foundation raised $2.5 million toward this project with our Cancer-Free Tomorrows - The Campaign for Cancer Care. The Thomas and Dorothy Leavey Cancer Center at Northridge Hospital is the premier provider of cancer care in the region. Our goal is to provide cancer patients with the latest treatment options utilizing the most advanced technology in an environment that promotes healing and well-being.

With this expansion we were able to invest in the next-generation linear accelerator for image guided radiation therapy. This non-surgical treatment can precisely target and destroy a tumor while sparing the surrounding healthy tissue and allows us to treat 50 patients a day.

The Thomas and Dorothy Leavey Cancer Center at Northridge Hospital is the premier provider of cancer care in the region. The $7.8 million expanded, 12,500 square-feet Cancer Center centralizes and streamlines oncology services. The latest technology, the Varian Trilogy LINAC, is on site for image-guided radiation therapy. This non-surgical treatment can precisely target and destroy a tumor while sparing the surrounding healthy tissue. This expansion also allows all of the clinical and support services to be located within the same area of the hospital, promoting healing and well-being.

The success of the campaign is due to the leadership and generosity of our board members, physicians, staff, grateful patients and community partners. Together we look forward to a world with cancer-free tomorrows.

A special thanks to the many volunteers that helped us to further support the Foundation’s mission. Through the continued leadership of Joan Geisbush and Susan Miller, the Golden Hour Guild celebrated its 25th year anniversary. The Pump Family began their 9th year of the Harold Pump Foundation and the Auxiliary supported the Foundation in this cancer center expansion and with many other clinical needs.

Harold Pump Foundation
The Harold Pump Foundation is dedicated to raising funds for the treatment and cure of cancer. The Foundation sponsors La Fiesta Para Su Salud, one-day free health and screening fairs for the under and non-insured residents of the San Fernando Valley. The Foundation also sponsored a Family Plan which provides cancer patients with free home health care, supplies and one-on-one therapy support. Additionally, the Foundation supported the Campaign for Cancer Care with a $300,000 contribution to the Cancer Center expansion project.

Angie’s Spa
Northridge Hospital received funding from Angie's Spa, a foundation created in memory of Angie Levy, who lost abrave and valiant nine-year battle with metastatic breast cancer in 2007 at the young age of 36. As a tribute to Angie, this organization provides funding to hospitals to provide free spa services to cancer patients. For individuals affected by cancer, complementary and holistic treatments have been proven to decrease stress and alleviate some of the side effects of traditional medical treatments.

Breast Cancer Patient Navigator Program
The Navigator Program enhances the quality of cancer care and improves women’s health in the region. The Breast Cancer Patient Navigator Program at Northridge Hospital, with funding from the Avon Foundation for Women , promotes breast health for women in the Valley, and supports those with breast cancer from diagnosis to recovery.

Center for Assault Treatment Services (CATS)
Northridge Hospital’s Center for Assault Treatment Services treats nearly 1,000 children and adults for sexual abuse and assault each year. It is the only 24/7 program in the San Fernando and Santa Clarita Valleys. Additionally, the CATS team increased education and training for 1,100 mandated child abuse reports this year.

SODI Trims Down Childhood Obesity Rates
School-Based Obesity and Diabetes Initiative (SODI) is a program designed to assist public schools in developing and implementing wellness programs with a focus on obesity and diabetes. The program is for low-income students, parents and school staff in 23 Los Angeles Unified School District schools in six high-need communities.

PATH-AT Peer Success
As the only program of its kind in the San Fernando Valley, the Promoting Alternatives for Teen Health through Artes Teatro (PATH-AT) program recruits local high school students as peer educators. The PATH-AT teens reach out to middle school students in underserved areas where they lead a series of after-school workshops.

Yvonne Wiggins Nursing Leadership Program
Facey Medical Foundation and the UniHealth Foundation provided a memorial gift to Northridge Hospital in tribute of Yvonne Wiggins, RN, a nurse who cared for patients in the San Fernando Valley for many years. Northridge Hospital established the Yvonne Wiggins Nursing Leadership Program to enhance nursing leadership development at the bedside by allowing future nurse leaders to advance their critical thinking skills.

Destination Northridge
Destination Northridge addresses one of the major contributors to the national nursing shortage, turnover–the lack of retaining the current workforce. Research has shown that health systems having an uncommon degree of commitment from their nursing staff have created great work environments.

Nonprofit Security Grant Program
In partnership with the California Emergency Management Agency, Northridge Hospital has participated in the Nonprofit Security Grant Program for several years. This funding has helped to update the security capacity for the multiple buildings on this medical campus. These facility enhancements establish a more secure healing environment for patients, their families and visitors.
