2007 Annual Report
We’re Planting the Seeds for a Healthier Tomorrow
Northridge Hospital Medical Center’s roots run deep within our community and the greater Los Angeles area. We have so much to be proud of and so much to be thankful for.
This year, our Emergency Department became more effective and efficient with the addition of the EDIS (Emergency Department Information System.) We raised the $1.1 million needed to make the Northridge ED the first paperless Emergency and Trauma Department in the San Fernando Valley. The EDIS system enhances safety and outcomes; improves efficiency and intercommunication with other hospital services; and improves staff retention and recruitment.
Construction has also begun on the expansion of the Thomas and Dorothy Leavey Cancer Center. The addition of the next-generation linear accelerator will allow Northridge Hospital to elevate the current exceptional cancer program and meet higher patient volume. Northridge Hospital currently sees an average of 45 patients per day–demand for radiation therapy services is projected to increase to 55 patients per day in the next two years.
The Foundation’s funds are also Promoting Abstinence for Teen Health (PATH) – addressing the need to reduce teen pregnancies in the Valley through a peer approach method in middle schools. Additionally, the Foundation continues to support CATS, Northridge Hospital’s Center for Assault Treatment Services program, which provides comprehensive and compassionate care to help victims of sexual assault recover both physically and emotionally.
Embark on a Journey to Survivorship
Personal connections are important, especially for new patients who are overwhelmed after a cancer diagnosis. That’s where Northridge Hospital’s Navigator Program comes in. A Navigator serves as a personal guide who meets with inpatients and outpatients one-on-one to better acquaint them with our Cancer Center, the Harold & Carol Pump Department of Radiation Oncology and the Carole Pump Women’s Center. Patients can rely on their Navigator for compassionate support, encouragement and education to ensure they have every available resource to make informed decisions regarding treatment options and symptom management.
This is a service that top cancer centers nationwide have recognized as a best practice. We are very privileged that our Foundation was able to secure the Avon Foundation grant, which allows us to be among the few facilities to offer this service in the nation. This program enhances the reputation of NHMC as the premier cancer center in the San Fernando Valley.
