LUCAS Device Training

Northridge Hospital Foundation Purchases New Lifesaving LUCAS Device

Thanks to the generous support of our donors, Northridge Hospital Foundation has purchased a new LUCAS Chest Compression System for the hospital. This state-of-the-art device is designed to improve cardiac arrest response and enhance patient outcomes.

Recently, the ICU and Emergency Department teams had the opportunity to test and train on the newly acquired device. Tiffany Pessy, ICU Nursing Director, and Sandra Marquez, Emergency Department Nursing Director, along with various members of the nursing staff and first responders, participated in a hands on demonstration that allowed them to become familiar with the LUCAS device’s operation, application, and life-saving benefits in real world emergency scenarios.

The LUCAS Chest Compression System is a mechanical device that delivers consistent, high quality automated chest compressions to patients in cardiac arrest. It features a backplate and piston driven compression module that replicates manual CPR but with superior consistency and endurance, far beyond what can be provided by human hands alone.

Key Benefits of the LUCAS Device Include:

  • Consistency: Delivers uninterrupted, guideline compliant compressions every time, unlike manual CPR, which may vary due to fatigue or technique.
  • Efficiency: While the LUCAS performs compressions, clinical staff are free to focus on other critical life-saving tasks such as airway management, medication delivery, and patient monitoring.
  • Safety: Reduces the physical demands on rescuers, minimizing fatigue and the risk of injury during extended resuscitation efforts or patient transport.
  • Guideline Compliance: Meets the latest American Heart Association (AHA) and international CPR guidelines to ensure the highest standard of care.

Widely used by emergency medical services and hospitals worldwide, the LUCAS device is an essential tool during code blue events, helping to sustain blood flow even during patient transfers or imaging procedures, when manual compressions can be especially challenging.

This hands on training session reflects Northridge Hospital’s ongoing commitment to equipping its medical teams with the latest technology to provide exceptional, life-saving care. With practice and preparation, staff are better prepared than ever to respond swiftly and effectively when every second counts.
